Personality Characteristics of The Musically Talented

Abstract
An attempt was made to ascertain the commonly expressed opinion that the musically-talented persons are often queer or have somewhat abnormal qualities in their personality make-up. A group of primary school students (N=24) and high school students (N=57) was selected who were judged to have music talent by their teacher in charge or their music teachers. Guilford Factorial Inventory was administered to them and other non-talented students of control group.
It was found that:
1) The musically talented primary school students were found to have more emotional stability, self-confidence, objectivity, composure and cooperativeness compared to the control group, suggesting healthier adjustment and more wholesome personality make-up. They were found, on the other hand, to be less reflective in terms of thinking introversion than the control students.
2) However, such differences were not found among high-school students between the musically talented and untalented. The musically talented students were noticed to be less objective compared with the non-talented ones, on the other hand, although to a mild degree.
3) Therefore, there is no evidence to suggest that the music students may have more personality problems or abnormal features in their adjustment compared with other students.
4) As the sampling is not wide-ranged enough and the evaluating means are not thorough enough, excessive generalization of the results should be discouraged.
